Open Campus ID: the Proof of Education Protocol
Open Campus is introducing its own Proof of Education protocol with the use of Decentralized Identifiers (DID) in the form of Soulbound Tokens (SBTs), non-transferable NFTs that are virtual representations of learners’ online personas. Holding one will grant you a unique onchain identifier with an .edu domain – just like your very own passport that no one can replicate or impersonate.
This will rewrite the future of education, where learners’ education credentials will be verifiable and immutable, affirming their skill and caliber to employers and institutions. This ID will also serve as a membership ticket to unlock access to Open Campus special offers and exclusive educational courses available from Open Campus Alliance partners.
Phase 1 allowlist registration will be starting soon – opening on Sept 14 (Tues), 10:00 UTC at http://id.opencampus.xyz. It will be eligible for Open Campus supporters who owns over 50 $EDU or one Genesis NFT (Golden Backpack or Silver Notebook). A total of 1,000 allowlist spots will be available to claim until supply runs out.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Open Campus ID?
Open Campus ID is a decentralized Proof of Education protocol, empowering learners to own and verify their academic achievements and credentials on-chain.
Powering the protocol are Decentralized Identifiers (DID) in the form of Soulbound Tokens (SBTs), non-transferable NFTs that are virtual representations of learners’ online personas.
The primary benefit for learners is they have control over what information is associated with their OC IDs. They can decide which pieces of information they want to share and when they want to share them, including their OC Alliance engagement and learning profile.
2. What kind of user data and learning information will be linked to Open Campus ID?
There will be three types of user data that will be associated with Open Campus IDs and stored in a self-sovereign manner: User profile data, learning achievements and verifiable credentials.
User profile data includes:
- Name, age, location
- Optional identifiers such as email, social media accounts
Learning achievements include:
- Badges granted by educational providers
- Key milestones in users’ learning histories such as the completion of a course
Verifiable credentials include:
- Academic certificates and diplomas issued by educational providers
3. What are verifiable credentials in relation to Open Campus ID?
Verifiable credentials (VCs) are digital representations of documents, such as a degree certificate or diploma, that can be stored securely and linked to Open Campus ID.
VCs are cryptographically signed by the provider issuing them and can be verified by academic institutions. This ensures that the credentials are authentic and cannot be altered or tampered with in any way and allows individuals to prove their identity for digital interactions in a secure and verifiable way.
A VC representing a diploma would represent all the data elements found on a physical diploma, with the addition of a cryptographic digital signature from the academic institution.
4. What chain will OC ID be built on?
The Open Campus team is currently in discussions with various chain partners. We will be making further announcements once confirmed.
5. How does OC ID help me as a learner?
Complete, verifiable records: With OC ID, learners get access to a complete, tamper-resistant and verifiable record of their academic achievements, which affirms to employers and other academic institutions the legitimacy and caliber of learners.
Personalized Learning: Institutions are able to access personalized data in a self-sovereign way, allowing them to create tailored educational experiences, relevant course recommendations and adaptive learning journeys.
Earn $EDU Incentives: Learners can earn $EDU rewards as they learn through OC Alliance partner institutions, unlocking even more learning opportunities.
6. Is it a must to have Open Campus ID to access OC Alliance Partners’ services?
No, you are free to access OC Alliance partners’ services without an Open Campus ID but you will not enjoy the benefits that come with using one.

Phase 1 – Sep 14 (Thurs), 10:00 UTC
Phase 2 & 3 – TBC
8. How can I be eligible to be on the allowlist for Phase 1 and 2?
Phase 1: 50 $EDU or Genesis NFT (Golden Backpack / Silver Notebook)
Phase 2: DID holders from other protocols, to be announced later
9. What is the benefit of being on the Early Phase Allowlist than the other phases?
You will be given extra OC Points to participate in the Campus Reward program for a raffle for amazing gifts (which may include prizes such as $EDU or special offers to educational products) and learning experiences!
10. If I get allowlisted in the Early Phase, do I need to hold my $EDU or Genesis NFT until the mint?
You will only need to hold them when you register for Allowlist.
